SICON BEAUTY 18)
3, 4 & 5 January 2018
With its aesthetic, spiritual, materialistic and other possible versatile dimensions, beauty defines reality and interprets the life of man and art. From an abstract idea that resists objective evaluation, it concretized itself in objects and perspectives. Time, tradition and cultures made their own interventions to shape and deconstruct the truth of beauty. Discourses on beauty emphasize differences and uniqueness on the one side and utopian ideals based on sensory perceptions rendering universal homogeneous aesthetic proportions on the other side. Graeco-roman civilization, middle age, renaissance, enlightenment, romantic, modern and postmodern periods had their own overture to its conceptualisation that provide a comparative framework for studies and deliberations on beauty. Philosophers like Immanuel Kant, Plato, Aristotle Lucretius, Cicero etc. proposed epicurean and stoic concepts underlining the opposites such as decorum and symmetry that beauty contained. With innumerable manifestations across spheres and disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, eco criticism, aesthetics, culture studies, architecture, engineering etc., the benchmarks of beauty have been constantly validated, discarded and reconfigured.
