Though the Project takes up Language –oriented issues, it doesn’t mean to confine itself to language-centred issues.
Anganawadi Empowerment Programmes
The Department and Manjeri Municipality jointly organised a one day training programme for Anganwadi Teachers of the Manjeri Municipality on 17 November 2014 at the college. The training, which was part of the Community Outreach programme of the English Dept, was inaugurated by the Chair of Manjeri Municipality, Mr. Vallanchira Mohammedali. Speaking on the occasion he argued that the sense of direction provided at the Kindergarten or Anganawadi level will pay rich dividends in Higher Education. The impressionable ages during which the Anganawadi teachers mould the learning and living experiences of the kids should set them on a course to successful citizenship. He lauded the initiative of the Unity English Department as it is a step in the noble direction.
This is the first of such a programme in the whole of Kerala which targets the Anganwadi teachers who are basically a marginalised group and the training model can be replicated elsewhere as it provides a much needed boost for Elementary Education in the state, Dr. P. K. Babu, Head of English, Unity College, said in his welcome address. The sessions which were related to child management in the classroom, kid psychology and communication activities were handled by Dr. Annie Ninan, Associate Professor in Home Science, M. K. Vineetha, Shahina Mol. A. K and Reena. C. M, Asst. Professors in English. The certificates for the participants were given away by Mr. Kanniyan Aboobacker, Chairman, Municipal standing committee for Education. M. K. Vineetha, Asst. professor in English thanked the gathering.
